Vaginal dryness – hormone changes
Our hormone levels change as we move through the various phases of life and fluctuate from time to time. During the menopause, there is a significant drop in oestrogen levels. Blood flow to the vaginal region therefore decreases significantly. This causes the skin to become thinner and more likely to tear. One in three women is affected by vaginal dryness during the menopause.
Symptoms of vaginal dryness:
- Skin tears
- Increased susceptibility to infections
- Itching and burning in your intimate area
- Pain during intercourse due to lack of moisture
Vaginal dryness is characterised by a lack of moisture in the internal and external vaginal area. Women of all ages can be affected by this issue. It is most common during the menopause.
Causes of vaginal dryness:
- Hormonal fluctuations during menopause, pregnancy or when breastfeeding
- Gynaecological operations
- Psychological problems such as stress, anxiety and nervousness
- Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis (MS) and endometriosis
- Side effects of chemotherapy
- Heavy alcohol and nicotine consumption
